The Jacksonville Jaguars best defensive back Rashean Mathis may not be wearing his pink NFL jersey as part of the NFL’s drive to support breast cancer awareness month this Sunday when the team plays against the Tennessee Titans. He broke an index finger on his left hand.
But he is now wearing a pink and black cast. Mathis said Tuesday he still has a screw in his finger and several stitches. These things will be removed later this week but Mathis is not expected to practice and it is still early to say whether he will be able to play by Sunday.
“I don’t know how it’s going to do yet,” said Mathis, who has 18 tackles and two interceptions this season. “It’s still questionable. I’m going to see. Hopefully I can go.”
Mathis broke a bone on the back of his finger while batting away a pass late in the fourth quarter against the St. Louis Rams on Oct. 18 and had a surgery during the bye week. If he could not return to the field by the weekend, Scott Starts or Tyrone Brackenridge may take over his starting job.
